Bar’N’Bus is a charitable trust that works in partnership with local churches to serve communities through the use of converted double decker buses.

The customised buses provide a safe place for young people to relax and meet friends. They currently go out on a weekly basis during the evening to various locations throughout South East Essex and the volunteers on the bus give the young people a listening ear, support and a safe environment to socialise.

The Bus is an ordinary double-decker bus which has been modified to function as a mobile youth centre. It has a PS3, Xbox, table-top games, free soft drinks bar, tables and seats.

On Friday evenings during term time the Bus is in the Asda car park in South Woodham Ferrers. All young people aged from 11 upwards are welcome to pop in between 8.15pm and 10 pm.

South Woodham Evangelical Church is one of the five churches that support the project financially and pay for the cost of hiring the Bus and by providing volunteers to run this Bus Team. The Bus has been coming to South Woodham Ferrers for nearly seven years now and has continuously received encouragement and support from the Town Council, Chelmsford Borough Council and our local Police and all have given generous donations towards the hire charges. Asda allow us to use their car park and donate £2 each week for refreshments and are also very supportive of the project.

Can you help?

Bar‘N’Bus are currently looking for volunteer drivers for the following Bus Teams:

  • South Woodham Ferrers on a Friday evening
  • Corringham on a Thursday evening
  • Rayleigh on a Thursday evening

As the bus is classed as a Mobile Project Vehicle anyone between the ages of 25-70 can drive the bus providing that they have held a category B (car) licence for over two years.

Each volunteer driver will need about 10 hours tuition, which will be provided by Bar’N’Bus, and would be expected to drive about once a month (or more if they can do so).

Anyone interested should contact Adrian King:

Ode to the Bus

The Buses go out all over the place
We serve biscuits, soft drinks, with a cheery face.
We’re there to help youngsters with nowhere to go,
Give them encouragement and hear tales of woe.

Despite appearances, they’re just children in need.
They’re not bad kids, just easily led.
With play station, X box (whatever they are!)
We help them have fun so they don’t get bored.

Some have real problems, no childhood at all
Some are in trouble or bullied at school.
Their home life’s difficult with parents split up
Or struggling financially with no job, can be tough.

The churches all put in to pay for the hire
Sometimes we get grants from Councils who care.
Sometimes do fundraising dinners and jumbles
Or people just give anonymously, humble.

We’re all volunteers, no fees do we earn
We don’t preach or lecture, don’t want them to squirm.
We chat and share jokes, or listen, advise
We tell of God’s love, what it means in our lives.
